Quote of the Day

In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer.

I'm ceded - I've stopped being Their's

Fear not, the title of this blog does not suggest any "emo"-esque behavior. The title of this one is in reference to an Emily Dickinson poem which I just finished reading for my new English course I am taking at the University. I think this is the one I will write my essay on. . . Can't be too certain yet, though.

It rained today -- and when I say it rained, I mean it rained. Kelowna doesn't get a lot of rain that often (some of us call it the "California of Canada") but today it was rather hellish if I do say so. Thankfully I made it on the bus before the worst of it hit, Jesus. It was coming down like there was an apocalypse or something. However, as always it stopped after only moments, and remained dripping down as I walked home from school. It was really nice out then, the storm was blowing away as I walked towards it, and the sun was warm on my back. This was the perfect opportunity to take a few good selfies and wet road pictures for Instagram. . .

I have the perfect set up right now -- I am sitting here at my art desk that my lovely boyfriend/best friend bought me over a year ago for our first Christmas together, and listening to 8-Tracks (classical to be precise). I also have a small, purple candle glowing to my right, and my copy of "The Norton Anthology: American Literature Vol. 2" next to the candle. If only I had a cup of tea. . . That would make this ridiculously fancy set up perfect, would it not?

I rather enjoyed my first class today, hence why I have said book next to me. Before I wrote this I had just finished up reading several poems by Emily Dickinson, as well as a few verses from Walt Whitman's "Song of Myself". While Whitman's work I found good, though very long, I thoroughly enjoyed Emily Dickinson's work the most. I didn't know who I would choose for my essay topic, but after reading Dickinson's poem which opened with the line "I'm ceded - I've stopped being Their's - . . ." (Dickinson) I found her cryptic style and idiosyncratic ways of punctuation really appealed to me.

And what an odd lady she was, too! She was said to have always worn white (as far as I'm sure) and to have never left her father's home until the day she died. A very mysterious woman to say the least. . . Her poems are wonderful, however, and I am looking forward to Thursday's class wherein we discuss more about them.

I also played "World of Warcraft" for the first time in a month and bit today. . . I love that game - six years and counting! Blizzard, you own my soul. Oh darn, now I want to play more. . . I think I am going to bring this to a close and go do exactly that!

Love,

Kate xoxo
